Januray 28 – February 5, 2023

Eastman Opera Theater Black Box; Rochester, NY

Händel’s ‘Alcina,’ transports audiences into a world of sorcery, deception, and the triumph of true love. Based on an excerpt from Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem “Orlando Furioso,” the opera unfolds on an enchanted island ruled by the sorceress Alcina, who lures and seduces knights only to discard them. When the heroic Bradamante arrives in search of her fiancé, a knight ensnared by Alcina, she must navigate the island’s treacherous terrain disguised as her brother Ricciardo, with the help of her companion Melisso. Alcina reimagines the story in the modern context of social media, exploring themes of magic and duplicity in the digital age. As audiences enter this familiar yet fantastical world, they are invited to contemplate the power of perception and the allure of illusion in an age where anyone can become a sorcerer with the right filter and angles.
